Giving new life to a former youth centre in Düsseldorf-Eller

Monoma Germany and the Evangelical Church District of Düsseldorf transform a vacant property into a vibrant place for the community.

After years of standing empty, the prominent building at Straußenkreuz 116 in Düsseldorf-Eller has been given a new purpose. Formerly used as a youth centre, boarding facility and accommodation hub, the property had remained vacant for a long period. The consequences were visible: vandalism, break-ins and increasing deterioration affected not only the building itself but also the surrounding neighbourhood.

Through a successful partnership between the Evangelical Church District of Düsseldorf and Monoma Germany, the building has now been brought back to life. With the arrival of its first student residents, an important milestone has been reached, turning a vacant property into an active and valuable part of the community once again.

Reimagining vacancy

For the Evangelical Church District of Düsseldorf, it was clear that simply securing the building would not provide a sustainable solution. The goal was to restore purpose to the property and reconnect it with the local community.

Together with Monoma Germany, a concept was developed that creates affordable student accommodation while delivering a positive impact on the neighbourhood. The new residents not only bring activity back to the building but also contribute to greater social presence, safety and vitality in the area.

Art creates identity and connection

One of the most visible elements of the transformation is the redesigned façade. Artist Jan Herrmann created a concept that reflects the district’s identity and local heritage. Recognisable landmarks, including Eller Castle, have been incorporated into the artwork, strengthening the connection between the building and its surroundings.

The vibrant colours and welcoming design also symbolise the collaboration between the project partners and represent a fresh start for the property.

Positive response from the neighbourhood

The transformation has been warmly received by local residents. Where there was once an empty building associated with nuisance and decline, there is now a place where people live, study and contribute to the local community.

The presence of residents has brought new energy to the street and has helped increase the sense of safety in the immediate area. Many neighbours have expressed their appreciation that the building once again serves a meaningful purpose and has become an active part of daily life in Eller.

Building a sustainable future

The current student housing concept provides a strong foundation for the future development of the site. The Evangelical Church District of Düsseldorf and Monoma Germany are already exploring additional social and community-focused initiatives to ensure the building continues to serve as a vibrant and sustainable place for the neighbourhood in the years ahead.
